Maryland Correctional Institution-Women (MCI–W) Schedule of Events

MCI-W is one of two prisons for women in the Jessup, Maryland area. (Patuxent Institution also offers AVP for women.) Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops are typically held the 2nd full weekend (Friday through Sunday) of each month. Those who have not yet had AVP training or would like to continue their experience with AVP are welcome to attend the weekend workshops as outside participants on a space-available basis. We ask that you commit to being with us for the entire weekend session.
Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What do I need to do if I want to participate? Please use the contact bar on the “Contact Us” page to introduce yourself, let us know of your interest and indicate what workshop level you seek (I.e., basic, advanced, training for facilitators).
  • What’s involved in the Volunteer application process? Once you contact us expressing your interest, we will email you the necessary forms (cover sheet & application) to complete and email them to the MCI-W Volunteer Coordinator. It can take several weeks for clearance to be completed.
  • What are the hours for AVP?  The program is Friday, 6–9 PM; Saturday, 9 AM–5 PM and Sunday, 9 AM–5 PM. Facilitators have a planning meeting on the Tuesday prior to the workshop weekend from 5–5 PM. Allow at least 30 minutes to clear security prior to the program start time.
  • How do I get to MCI-W?  MC-W is located at 7943 Brockbridge Road in Jessup.
  • What should I wear? Clothes that are comfortable for sitting and light movement, however, denim pants (e.g., jeans) are not permitted. Temperatures can be quite variable so layers to allow for adjustment to cooler and warmer rooms are helpful. For more information about clothing restrictions for guests, visit http://www.dpscs.state.md.us/locations/mciw.shtml . You will need to pass through a metal detector.
  • What should I bring?  Be sure to bring your driver's license. Bring your AVP materials and a pen if you would like. Flexibility and a smile are very helpful as well. Otherwise it is best to bring as little as possible.  Lockers are available to store your car keys (50 cents) before entering.  Cell phones are not permitted within the facility.
  • What about meals?  On Saturday and Sunday we have a complementary lunch in the staff lunchroom at 11:00 am.
  • Is there anything special I need to know if this is my first time going in to a prison?  Be sure to let us know this when you contact us so we can provide additional information about the experience and appropriate support along the way.
